Rivals of Aether is an indie platformer that bears a striking resemblance to Mario fighting games. As one of the few successful attempts to tackle the Super Smash Bros. formula, it has built up a dedicated community over the years, even developing its own esports scene alongside Smash events.

The game has also introduced characters from other indie games, including Shovel Knight and Ori, to its roster. The Definitive Edition includes all the characters released so far, supports online multiplayer for up to four players, and adds new modes like Tetherball.

In Rivals of Aether, removing shields in favor of a parry mechanic encourages rapid, combo-heavy action as animal fighters (and a few fantasy creatures too) clash on a range of interesting stages. Originally released on Steam in 2017, Rivals of Aether is now available for free download in the Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch and PC. Anyone who owns the regular version of Rivals on PC will be upgraded to the Definitive Edition automatically. The game also includes full Steam Workshop support, allowing players to design custom skins and moves for fighters.

As a token of appreciation, players who purchased DLC characters will unlock unique skins for them in the game. The Definitive Edition marks the first time Rivals of Aether has launched on Nintendo Switch, putting it alongside its inspiring series and fellow Smash spin-off Brawlhalla.
